From Jugla to the Freedom Monument stretches the city's main artery - Freedom Street. This stretch is a crossroads of intense traffic flows, where transport routes and industrial infrastructure meet. However, in order to maintain the right "blood pressure" of the city's "artery", it needs people who give meaning to this dynamic and create a pleasant environment for coexistence. In such a saturated environment, how can we connect meaningfully with ourselves and with what is happening around us?
Whether it's a green patch of land in the desert with water and plants, or a permafrost free of snow and ice, an oasis is always a pleasant change from the monotony of the surroundings. Inviting the activation of all five senses, the audiovisual installation Oasis of Change serves as a temporary refuge from the stimuli of the outside world and an exercise in conscious presence.
In the evening of "White Night", the dreamy atmosphere of the oasis will be enriched by Spāre Vītol's concert from her first album "Lullabies keep us awake", created in collaboration with other musicians and visual artists. The project was born out of an interest in sound repetition, audio recordings from non-existent places, and a devotion to the feeling of being half asleep.
The installation will be on view on Friday (15.00-20.00), Saturday (18.00-01.00) and Sunday (15.00-20.00). A concert by Dragonfly Willow will take place on Saturday (21.00-21.45).
The installation and the concert are part of the programme of the contemporary culture forum "White Night". It is organised by the architectural studio SIJA and curator Tīna Pētersone in collaboration with VEF Kvartāls. The project is supported by the Riga Municipality and the building materials store DEPO. All White Night events can be found on the website
